Duck Races
The front runner nears the finish line

Lions’ annual Duck Race draws hundreds to Port Sydney

It was a perfect day for a … well … a duck race. And hundreds of people gathered at Port Sydney’s Indian Landing on the edge of the Muskoka River to swim, play games, take in the Zoo To You exhibit, have their face painted, chat, eat and wait for the ducks to race down the river to the finish line.

The use of the word race may be a bit of an exaggeration. Many of the ducks decided to bask in the sun on the river bank upstream. The few who broke away meandered slowly toward the finish line, turning what was expected to be a photo finish into more of a sigh of relief.

Nonetheless, people were in the spirit with many manning the finish line just in case an errant duck made a break for the rapids.

The first duck to cross the finish line belonged to Ryan Davis. For its stellar efforts Ryan won the top prize of $2000. In second place was a duck belonging to Laura Umphrey, taking the $500 prize. The third place prize of $250 went to Keith Kowalchuk.

The Stephenson Lions Club hosts the annual event which has been running for 17 years. Proceeds from the event go to Fairvern Nursing Home, CNIB Lake Joseph Centre and Huntsville Door Youth Centre.
