Lake of Bays Mayor Terry Glover is challenging other municipalities to contribute funds to support a powwow at Annie Williams Park in Bracebridge scheduled for June 29 and 30.
Glover spoke about the last meeting he attended as part of the Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table. It was there that he learned of the financial challenges organizing the powwow presented. “It was looking really grim, but it’s really picked up,” he said.
Glover told council it’s been hundreds of years since First Nations communities have met on the Muskoka River. “So this is going to happen in Annie Williams Park, which is on the Muskoka River, and this is the first powwow anyone’s heard of that’s not on a reservation, so it’s a big deal,” added Glover.
He said that after speaking with the Township CAO, he decided to ask the council to donate $1,000 to the event from the municipality’s sponsorship fund, which might get it some recognition at the event. He also challenged other municipalities to do the same.
