The Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation is awarding the $1000 Harriet T. Weaver bursaries to graduates Edyth (Edie) Clute of Huntsville High School, and Adanna Van Petegem Harkness of Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School. Both will enroll at the University of Guelph, Edie in environmental sciences, and Adanna in animal biology.
“Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation (LBHF) takes pleasure in the Harriet T. Weaver bursaries, thanks to an endowment supported by Brink Weaver and many other donors. The bursaries have increased annually since our first awards in 2014 and we trust that will continue,” said LBHF president Judith Mills.
The Bursaries are awarded annually to a graduating student from each of Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School and Huntsville High School who are accepted for study at a college or university in a subject related to LBHF activities. The awards were made possible thanks to an initial endowment from Harriet’s son Brink, a former president of the Lake of Bays Association.
Edie commented that she is “very grateful that the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation chose me as one of this year’s recipients of the Harriet T. Weaver Bursary. I hope that one day I will be able to apply the skills I learn during my post-secondary education to help conserve the natural heritage in my community of Lake of Bays!”
Adanna said “I’d like to thank the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation for supporting me with this bursary. I am excited to study animal biology because I want to eventually become a vet. I plan to take next year’s deferral period to save money and keep my studies going – I plan to take a few extra high school courses. I will head to Guelph in September 2024.”
Founded in 1985, the LBHF is a community-based non-profit that protects the natural, built, and cultural heritage of the Lake of Bays Township and watershed. Operated by a volunteer board, the Foundation’s activities include education, stewardship, conservation easements, land acquisition, and documenting community histories. It stewards 310 acres of land including over 7 kilometers of shoreline. LBHF is a member of the Ontario Land Trust Alliance.
