For a group of women living at the Rogers Cove Retirement Residence knitting through the winter provided much more than a distraction from the cold winter months.
The group of nine ladies started a knitting group in support of their HOPE initiative. HOPE stands for helping others through purposeful engagement. What evolved was the idea to knit squares that would form afghan blankets and would in turn be donated to chemotherapy patients, providing them with warmth, comfort and joy.
In all, five blankets have been completed and are on their way to new homes.
It feels good to do good. Of that there is no doubt. However, for this group of women it felt especially good to feel useful. The camaraderie, the bright colours of the wool and working towards a goal, helped the knitters through some of the greyer days the winter.
When I asked the women how they felt, I was surprised to hear them say that they felt useful. We forget that when they move in here they really don’t have to do anything anymore. So to feel useful is a very important thing.

The ladies have decided to carry on with their square making. They say that once word got out about what they were doing they have had an almost endless supply of wool donated and they want to continue to spread the joy their blankets bring.
