The other day I was thinking that we hadn’t seen Len Ross or Suni recently when I encountered them on the swing bridge watching the spring water go down the river. Upon greeting them I was shocked that I could now hear Suni.
Len indicated that sometimes happens to people Suni really likes, and I guess I am now in that circle. When enquiring about their well being Len said they were in good health and the people of Huntsville and Muskoka were always happy to meet Suni but weren’t quite sure about the old guy walking around with a stuffed animal. Len went on to say when we last met Suni was feeling just a little down and missed his home in Barbados. He also said that he and Suni recently met with Rob and Beth Saunders, a local Huntsville family.
Rob told him they were just about to take their Rotary exchange student on a little trip so she could see the Nation’s Capital, Ottawa, and the City of Montreal in Quebec and wondered if they could take Suni along for the adventure. Len went on to say that before he could say anything Suni replied to Rob with a very loud “SURE.” It now appears that Suni also speaks to Rob.
As the story goes, during the trip they encountered a moose in Algonquin Park, visited the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa and saw the sights of beautiful Montreal, and totally enjoyed the welcoming culture encountered in the Province of Quebec. This brings us to “Je suis Suni.” Suni told me that being from the Caribbean, English can be spoken sometimes just a little differently and with a local accent. However, in Ottawa, he began to hear more French, and in Montreal, it was everywhere. He said he liked it and when he encountered people, he liked he learned to say “Je suis Suni.” (I am Suni!)
When I asked Suni directly about his trip he said it was wonderful, he loved the scenery, and the people he met, and he loved Montreal bagels. As we were saying our goodbyes he repeated that he was grateful and happy to have met the Saunders and that they had taken him on their trip.
