Does anyone remember this view of the Town Dock, ca. 1958. (Photo via Vintage Muskoka District)
Last week we shared this photo:
Lacrosse has long been part of Huntsville’s sporting history. The town’s first lacrosse club formed in the spring of 1901. According to Huntsville: With Spirit and Resolve, in 1902 town council donated 1,000 feet of hemlock plank to be used as seating at the lacrosse ground. And the sport was so popular that “special trains had to be engaged to take spectators to the club’s ‘away’ games.”
The players pictured here were the Tri-County Intermediate Champions in 1932.
Pictured are: (front from left) H. Cole, C Law, C. Huffman, E. Houser, C. (Charlie) Dinsmore, R. (Ray) Ball, J. Gioletti, G. Millest, G. (George) Snowden, R. Ganton; (back from left) W. N. MacDonald, H. Wilkins, S. Baker, G. (Gord) Metcalfe, W.D. (Bill) McCaffery, R. Higgs, S. (Stan) Snowden, C. Cooper, W. Kohn, and J. Fenton (Photo courtesy of the Baker Collection, Muskoka Heritage Place).
Where first names are noted, they are courtesy of Doppler readers Marlene Bennett and Allen Markle. Do you know any others?
Allen had this to add: “I think C. Dinsmore is Charles, who was bush boss for Bethune Pulp and Lumber for years and then worked for Muskoka Wood. G. and S. Snowden would likely be George and Stan. From reports and legend, George Snowden was a team on his own.”
Thanks, Marlene and Allen!

We built our cottage in 1954 with all materials coming from Huntsville Planing Mills which is the white building in the picture. Irwin Dawson was our builder. Many great memories boating to town from Grassmere Bay on Pen Lake.
My Grandfather, W. D. (Bill) McCaffery, was 50 years old in this photo and was still playing lacrosse! Incredible!!!
I wonder who is in the cabin enjoying the view? ?
I do remember this very picture. It became famous in our family because that is my Mom and Dad in their boat.
