This is chief of police John George Watson (left) and J.R. Reece in the early 1900s. They are standing at Main St. and Brunel, with the former Kent Hotel (where Kent Park is today) in the background. Watson became police chief in 1908 and held the position for 26 years. Reece operated the Bell telephone and telegraph office. In its early days, anyone wanting to place a call had to go to his office, and if they received a long-distance call they’d be summoned to the office. By 1905, long-distance calls could be placed from private telephones. Reece also served as division court clerk and coroner.
