It’s Wayback Wednesday, sponsored by Jamie Lockwood, broker/owner of Sutton Group Muskoka Realty!
What do you recognize in this 1944 view from the lookout?
The road in the centre of this image is Fairy Ave. Beyond it is the marsh that is now the Brendale Square area. And in the left foreground is the Kellock’s greenhouse.
Andrew Kellock and Sons was Huntsville’s first florist. They had purchased land along the Muskoka River that was formerly owned by the North Muskoka Agricultural Society, which moved its fairgrounds across the river to Memorial Park in 1930.
The Kellocks were also responsible for creating Riverside Park, where the Town Dock Park is today, complete with fountains, stone steps, and flower beds.
The lands for Huntsville Memorial Hospital came from the Kellock family, too. William Kellock sold the property where Fairvern Nursing Home now sits to the committee working to build a Red Cross outpost hospital in Huntsville. The hospital opened on May 17, 1949. Huntsville’s current hospital location opened in 1978.
