Huntsville’s downtown Empire lot sells for short of a million: agent

The sale of the Empire lot has been confirmed with a closing date of June, according to Toronto listing agent Alex Hayward of Harvey Kalles Real Estate Ltd.

The lot, located at the corner of Main and Centre, where the Empire Hotel once stood, is a prominent property in downtown Huntsville that was once filled with much-needed residential as well as retail units. It succumbed to a fire just before Thanksgiving in October 2009 and has sat fallow for years.

Hayward confirmed that it has sold “firm” for $950,000.

He said he thinks one of the buyers is local and the other from Toronto.

“The buyers are still working on their plans for the site,” he said, adding that he could not confirm the nature of the development—whether it would be commercial, residential, or a combination of both—and said the buyers’ names “would be revealed in due course.”

Why are seniors interests always put above everyone’s in this town? What about young families with youth to raise? Do we not care to attract new young families to Huntsville any longer?
I fully support seniors needs, but it feels very lopsided against families and youth in this town these days.

I just wonder how much work its going to take to make the lot usable, I dont think they e took all of the basement out when they’re it down. It was a pretty hefty basement.

  3. Wayne Sinclair says:

I certainly has been sad to see that lot sit empty for all these years, fantastic location for something much needed I hope. If it went back to the way it was with commercial and residential space I think would be wonderful thing. And bring the bus terminal back for ole’ times sake as well.

You nailed it Gordo . Looker for PM !

  5. Grant Hopper says:

It really let the street down, this is excellent news.

  6. Ryan Vallentin says:

Gord, he said he bought those four houses almost a decade ago. I bought my house 11 years ago for under 300K and it was brand new and sitting on 3 acres of property.

I looked at many in-town houses back in the end of 2009 for 100-200K, so it isn’t unreasonable to believe that he bought each for approximately 150K back then

I don’t live in Huntsville anymore …. I have read the comments above .. glad to hear that lot has finally been sold… but I question why does ‘affordable housing’ always have to be for seniors ?? What about young responsible adults starting out ??? Don’t they deserve a break once in a while too ??? I grew up in Novar/ Huntsville… and still have family there .. no wonder young people today don’t want to want to stay in their home town !!

  8. Gord Looker says:

Vote Jim Goodyear for Mayor! He bought 4 houses for $650K!!! LOL… call the B.S. cops. I hope the new Empire lot owners have deep pockets, but glad something’s happening.

  9. Brian Thompson says:

I echo Councillor Bob Stone’s comment….looking forward to hear what the new owners have in mind….

  10. Jim Goodyear says:

The irony being myself and a partner offered $650k almost a decade ago. Flatly turned down, so bought 4 in town homes (for less), and have sold them over the past 8 months for $1.7 million, not to mention the rent acquired that paid off the initial investment.

The previous owners were not too bright, no wonder it took 11+ years to sell this lot.

  11. James Rockwell says:

Hallelujah!!! What an absolute dump this location has been for the past 12 years. Still don’t understand why the town didn’t buy it and use it for a multipurpose facility; new library, seniors centre, affordable seniors housing, commercial business rental space, etc…

I guess it’s a demonstration and lesson in elected official ineptitude.

Word of wisdom to the new developers, don’t include this town council in on any of your plans, they are absolutely lost.

Looking forward to anything being there than the garbage dump it’s been since 2009.

I’m all excited! It’s about time!
    Now, let’s discuss available parking???

  13. Bob Stone says:

This is VERY exciting news that has been a long time coming. I can’t wait to hear their plans and help the new owners make this a vibrant hub in the heart of Huntsville.
