Huntsville Theatre Company presents Tennessee Williams classic “The Glass Menagerie”

The Huntsville Theatre Company has partnered with Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area to debut their next production, The Glass Menagerie.

“Mounting the play at Hidden Valley has proven to be an exciting endeavour,” said Caroline Heyblom, the director. “With the incredible backstage talents…we are going to transform the beautiful members’ lounge into an intimate theatre.”

Written by Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie is narrated by Tom Wingfield, a merchant marine looking back on the Depression years he spent with his overbearing Southern genteel mother and his physically disabled, cripplingly shy sister.

The Glass Menagerie struggles with the hope that life will be better if ‘the long awaited something’ finally happens,” said Heyblom. “The play shows how in our effort to cope with harsh realities, we will often escape to more comforting ‘illusions’ of our life.”

The veteran cast for the production consists of Dyanna Prisk as Laura Wingfield, Karen Thorn as Amanda Wingfield, Mark Rodrigues as Tom Wingfield and Matt Huddlestone as Jim O’Connor. The Glass Menagerie is produced by Mark Rodgrigues and directed by Caroline Heyblom with Cydney Jones as Stage Manager and Christina Merrick as Assistant Stage Manager.

The Glass Menagerie runs from April 5 to April 8 in the Members’ Lounge at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area. Evening shows are on April 5 to April 7 at 7:30 p.m. and matinee shows happen on April 7 and April 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be bought at Castle Antiques or online at www.huntsvilletheatre.org.

Although the play is set in the late 1930s, Heyblom said she believes the message rings true today. “It is my hope that audience members will be discussing the play long after the lights on the set have gone to black.”
