Natasha Varieur put the finishing touches on Huntsville High School’s fantastic Nordic ski season with a bronze medal in the junior girls individual distance category at OFSAA.
Billed as North America’s largest high school cross country ski championships, the two-day event included individual distance races and a four-person relay team sprint on an 800 m course, and saw 24 Huntsville athletes travel to Collingwood Collegiate to compete.
HHS was represented by teams at the senior boys, senior girls and junior boys levels, with three senior boys and three junior girls also qualifying to race in the individual event.
After two days of competition, the senior boys team finished fourth, while the junior boys finished fifth and senior girls came sixth, along with Natasha’s incredible individual finish.
“Our coaching staff was impressed with how the athletes managed the competition without having been able to pre-ski their courses,” said Head Coach John Cowan, as consecutive snow days delayed the championships and kept the skiers off the course. “All of our athletes competed confidently and did an admirable job representing their school and association.”
The Nordic team will be losing the majority of its senior members this year as several grade 12 students take the next step in their educational journey and graduate to postsecondary institutions. As a result, the team will be welcoming any novice skiers who would like to get involved with the program to come out to practices next November.
