Hungry? Huntsville’s food trucks have got you covered

Going out to eat will look a little different for summer 2020. It’s the perfect opportunity to check out one of the many food trucks in Huntsville.

There’s an array of unique options, from Mexican and Thai, to crêpes and specialty donuts, to everyone’s perennial favourite: poutine.

Some of Huntsville’s popular food trucks have returned this season, accompanied by new additions to the local scene.

Check them out below, and let us know which ones are your favourites—if you can decide!—in the comments.

Taco Stop (pictured above)

Just a two-minute walk from downtown Huntsville on the shore of the Muskoka River sits the Taco Stop, Huntsville’s only spot for fresh Mexican food. Taco Stop has been open for seven years and offers options for all dietary needs.

They offer unique choices such as chorizo, battered avocado, jackfruit (vegan), burrito bowls, and the popular “Funky Fries”—all of the taco toppings on fresh-cut fries.

Taco Stop is located on John Street next to Boston Pizza and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Merci Eh!

Right next to the Taco Stop on John Street is Merci Eh!, Muskoka Poutine.

They offer fresh-cut fries with authentic Québec cheese curds and vegan/gluten free gravy, and other options like deep fried mac & cheese.

Merci Eh! is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Frenchie’s Crêpe Café

Frenchie’s offers authentic French crêpes with both sweet and savoury options.

Exciting news for 2020 is that they’re moving locations as well as launching their own line of baked goods.

New treats will include made-from-scratch croissants, palmiers, apple turnovers, danishes, and other French pastries.

Update: Frenchie’s will be at 7 John Street beside Taco Stop and Merci Eh! on Wednesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fox in the Henhouse

The newest food truck in Huntsville is Fox in the Henhouse, located at 11 Cann Street, across from FreshCo.

The truck’s owners usually run a camp catering business, Red Fox Catering, in the summer months. But when they learned that camps wouldn’t be opening this season, they pivoted quickly and decided to buy a food truck to showcase their talents another way.

Fox in the Henhouse will be serving up gourmet fried chicken sandwiches and specialty doughnuts every day except Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting July 1.

Watch for updates on their Instagram page @fox_in_thehenhouse.

Thai Hut

The Thai Hut offers a wide range of authentic Thai food to go.

Nok’s truck has been running for six years and she has created a regular following in the Huntsville community.

Some of the Thai Hut’s best sellers include Pad Thai, spring rolls and curry dishes.

The Thai Hut is located in the plaza beside Canvas Brewing Co. and is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Muskoka Dog House

Muskoka Dog House is known for their specialty hot dogs, but they also offer hamburgers, sausages, hand-dipped onion rings, hand-dipped corn dogs, fresh-cut fries, and poutine.

They have unique hot dog toppings, including the Hawaiian Dog (grilled pineapple, Swiss cheese, chopped onion, diced tomato, teriyaki sauce, and mayo) and their most popular dish, the Junkyard Dog (cheddar cheese, bacon, dill pickle, crispy onions, mustard, chipotle sauce, and a dash of garlic on a grilled bun).

Muskoka Dog House is located at 304 Ravenscliffe Road and open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

On Focaccia by 3 Guys and a Stove

New to the 2020 food truck roster is On Focaccia, by 3 Guys and a Stove. The truck is located in the restaurant’s parking lot at 143 Highway 60.

On Focaccia is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and like the name says, everything is served on focaccia bread. Their most popular item so far has been the Corn Beef & Hot Mustard sandwich, but they offer everything from omelette sandwiches to buffalo chicken and burgers.

On Focaccia is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with breakfast being served until 11:30 a.m.

Smokin’ Hot BBQ

Smokin’ Hot BBQ is a favourite of both locals and cottagers.

This family-run business offers a variety of burgers cooked on a cherry wood-fired barbecue as well as poutine with authentic Québec cheese curds. When you visit, be sure to check out their sister truck, run by the daughters in the family, that offers vintage-style milkshakes.

There’s a beautiful view of Fairy Lake to enjoy while you eat, too.

Smokin’ Hot is located on Highway 60 across from Kawartha Dairy. Starting July 3, they’ll be open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Visit their Facebook page for updates.

Tristan’s Tasty Eatz

At 2222 Highway 60 is another returning favourite, Tristan’s Tasty Eatz.

They offer hot sandwiches, poutine, ice cream treats, and a selection of salads. Their most popular item is the Phoenix Rising Poutine which features buffalo chicken, double smoked bacon, ranch sauce, and green onion.

Tristan’s Tasty Eatz is open Sunday to Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Algonquin Café

After several years of success in Huntsville’s west end, the Algonquin Café decided to open a second location in a more central spot.

They offer a unique mix of Southern Classic BBQ and Canadian cuisine. Their most popular dish is the Smoked Brisket, a meat sandwich rubbed with Algonquin’s secret spice recipe and smoked in-house for 11 hours with the option of topping and a Cajun oil.

Located in the John Street plaza, the Algonquin Café food truck is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
