HTC’s holiday production opens with a gala fundraiser for The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation

The Huntsville Theatre Company (HTC) is getting ready for their holiday production of Danny, King of the Basement. Set in Toronto, this production deals with family issues, homelessness and their effects on youth. Director Lauren Saunders said this is a story about Danny and his mother Louise.

“They are what I call the hidden homeless. They are always on the move whether it’s couch surfing or bouncing between short-term rentals,” said Saunders. “Danny meets new friends Angelo and Penelope, introduces them to his imaginative world and finds that this move may be different.”

Danny, King of the Basement runs from November 22-25 at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area. HTC has partnered with The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation to host a Gala Dinner Fundraiser on opening night.

The Table CEO Heather Berg said this is a great partnership as this production showcases issues The Table is trying to address in Muskoka. “Danny focuses on youth homelessness, which connects beautifully with our re-opening of The Table Men’s Shelter on November 14,” said Berg. “We hope that their production will impact the audience to take whatever action they can on preventing youth homelessness and reaching out to support our Shelter.”

Tickets to the opening night Gala Fundraiser, on Thursday, November 22, are $40 for adults and $20 for youth 18 and under. Half of the proceeds will go to The Table. Tickets to the rest of the show dates are $20 for adult and $10 for youth. Donations of potatoes to The Table Food Bank will also be welcome at any show.

“The Table is grateful that HTC has chosen to partner with us for their upcoming production,” said Berg. “HTC recognizes that theatre is for everyone, regardless of their pocketbooks.”

Saunders said she’s hoping for a great turnout, not only during the Gala Fundraiser Dinner, but all the shows. “While this play deals with hard topics like family problems, homelessness and everything that comes with it, these characters are so imaginative and positive. They always make the best of what they have and I believe that will feel completely endearing to all those who see this show,” said Saunders.
