HHS girls soccer team back on track with 5-0 rout over Almaguin

After a shaky start to the season against Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, the HHS senior girls soccer team spent the past week refining their strategies and skills to get back on track against Almaguin on Thursday. Travelling into enemy territory, the Huntsville girls executed a nearly flawless game, taking control early on with a quick goal in the first minute, and they were just getting started. HHS continued to apply pressure in the second half, finishing off several tic-tac-toe scoring plays en route to a commanding 5-0 win to push their record to 1-1 this spring.

HHS officially began their season a week prior to their victory over Almaguin, heading down the highway to take on rival BMLSS in Bracebridge. The Hoyas were seven players short due to illness and a school field trip, but refused to give up as they battled to keep the score even through the first half. In the second frame, however, the depth of the Bracebridge team continued to wear down the depleted Huntsville bench. HHS would eventually concede three unanswered goals in the latter half as the Lakers came away with a 3-0 victory in their first home game of the season.

The girls also competed in an MPS invitational that same week, travelling to Parry Sound and playing through cold and snowy conditions in their first tournament of the spring. The Hoyas senior girls opened their year with a 7-0 win over a new Gravenhurst program, followed by a close 1-0 loss in their second game to host Almaguin. The HHS junior team exacted some revenge shortly after, with a 7-0 drubbing over the younger Almaguin squad in a game where snowy conditions resulted in a few adjustments being made to the pitch and game ball before play began.

“The PSHS staff did a good job of shovelling lines of green grass to establish boundaries,” said head coach John Cowan. “An orange size 5 regulation ball was used so the teams could track the ball in the snow.”

The Hoyas next game is the team home opener this Tuesday against a developing varsity program from Gravenhurst with a kick off time of 3:30pm.
