Evelyn Evangeline MacDonald turned 100 years young on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Muskoka Landing with a great surprise celebration while surrounded by family. What an amazing feat!
She moved into Muskoka Landing last September after living in her home on Ravenscliffe Road for many years. Evelyn was originally born in Mill Village, Nova Scotia, on June 8, 1924, and is one of four siblings. She has two sisters and one brother.
When she first moved to the Toronto area, she worked at Rowntree’s, which is now Neilson Chocolate Factory. She also worked for the Children’s Aid Society, looking after babies while they were waiting to be adopted. She met her husband, John, while working at Rowntree’s. Later, they bought a hobby farm in Palgrave. John died on his 60th birthday in 1993.
Evelyn moved to Huntsville in 2007 from their hobby farm in Palgrave. She has a large family: four daughters, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and too many nieces and nephews to count.
Asked how she feels about turning the big 100, she said: “I feel very blessed. I ate well and lived on a hobby farm – so I worked each day to stay fit. I grew our own vegetables and raised our own meat. Everything was free range or organic.”
They say you are what you eat. Again, congratulations Everlyn, and a very happy 100th birthday!
