Last week, the Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) released school board results for Grade 9 math assessments. Not all school boards in Ontario participated fully in this assessment in the spring due to labour issues in some locations in the province at that time. Consequently there are not provincial results to use as a comparator to school board results as is usually reported.
Trillium Lakelands District School Board posted an 87 per cent success rate for students studying at the academic level and achieving level 3 or 4 on the provincial assessment. Since 2009, TLDSB students have maintained this average of 87 per cent in the test.
“This speaks to the consistency of our teachers and our students striving for excellence,” stated Board Chairperson Louise Clodd.
For level 3 and 4 achievement for students in secondary schools studying at the applied level, the school board posted a rate of 59 per cent. Provincial results have hovered at 43 per cent over the past six years and since this time TLDSB students have achieved level 3 and 4 with an average gap of 15 per cent better than their peers in the province.
Bruce Barrett, Superintendent of Student Success and Secondary School Improvement, acknowledged this performance by saying, “While we are pleased that our applied learners continue to outpace students elsewhere in the province, we remain committed to bridging the gap in math results between our applied and academic learners.

At Huntsville High School, 78 per cent of academic math students versus 85 per cent at the board level met provincial standards; 52 per cent of applied math students versus 59 per cent at the board level met provincial standards.
