Calling all history and heritage buffs, planners, engineers, real estate professionals, and geography enthusiasts: Come on out for GIS Day in Huntsville, November 16, 2016.
Join us in Partners Hall on the first floor of the Huntsville Civic Centre at 37 Main Street E. from 11:00am to 2:00pm for a series of special presentations on the power of technology in understanding the world around us. Town of Huntsville Manager of Corporate Information Margaret Stead and District of Muskoka GIS Technician Stuart Paul will be on hand to present interesting and useful information about our community in a way you may never have seen before: through the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

11:00am – 12:00pm – Focus on History & Heritage
1879 Muskoka Atlas Story Map – an interactive map of what Muskoka was like in 1879
Register of Huntsville Properties of Heritage Interest – This is a new interactive map with downloadable data featuring 202 local properties. You will have opportunities to provide feedback and suggestions.
Huntsville Library Story Map – a pictorial record of the seven iterations of the Huntsville Public Library.
12:00 – 1:00pm – Focus on Land Use
Muskoka Web Map – interactive map featuring historical air photos, zoning, water quality maps and topographical maps.
Town of Huntsville Mapping (TOHM) – interactive map including 50 cm contour elevation lines, zoning, official plan designation data, sign bylaw areas, ATV-restricted areas and more.
1:00 – 2:00 pm – Focus on Sports & Recreation
A GIS view of Huntsville’s Trails, Beaches and Public Facilities, as well as some historical places of sport interest.
GIS stands for Geographic Information System, defined by National Geographic Society as “A computer system for capturing, storing, checking and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface…enabling people to more easily see, analyse and understand patterns and relationships.”

Thank you Margaret, Stuart and Teri for a very informative presentation for GIS Day in Huntsville. Being a history buff I had no problem staying awake during this very fast-paced one hour meeting, not like my student days at the old brick H.P.S. Sorry Principal Jack Laycock and Mrs. Stewart.
