Photo of Fred Francis.
Fred Francis was Huntsville’s first constable. According to Huntsville: With Spirit and Resolve by Susan Pryke, Francis received between $10-15 per year for that role.
He was also a prominent builder and father of Annie Wilgress who was the wife of George S. Wilgress whose law office was built down the hill from Francis House, adjacent to the swing bridge. In more recent years it has served as The Bookcase book store and Café Wilgress.
Thank you to Tim Wilgress for submitting this photo. Tim is Fred’s great-great-grandson and Annie’s great-grandson.

Thank you for this reminder of beautiful homes that were part of our history. It is a shame that the planning committee and town council does not protect our history. This house has supported many business over the years but its historical appearance has always been respected. According to the sketches published and severances given we will have another square 2 story box with 3 garage doors and a tin can sitting on top. . Can’t believe cars will be entering and exiting at that corner Is it really progress?

It is a beatiful buiding and the history behind it is interesting too. I hope that the new development does not take away from the aesthetic. Hope….it springs eternal
