Flood warning continues for the south branch of the Muskoka River

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is advising that the Flood Warning continues in the district until Thursday, May 4, 2023. High water levels and river flows continue for the South Branch Muskoka River between Baysville and Bracebridge.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring within specific watercourses and municipalities.

Current Conditions:

  • River flows will remain above flood thresholds over the next several days.
  • Weather forecasts call for rainfall up to 65 mm by Tuesday, May 2, 2023
  • It will take a number of days for the additional rain to work its way through the entire system. Downstream water bodies may experience a delay in the full impact of the upstream inputs.

    Ahh! another weather statement!
    Warning of flooding potential.
The solution? You need to contact your local conservation authority (we have none in Muskoka) or your MNR representative to find out what to do.
You will find that MNR has no in person presence in the area, does not answer phones except maybe on weekday business hours if they are not “receiving an abnormally high number of calls” and really what can they do?
They can tell you it might, or might not, flood. They can guess at when and for how long but you can do this too.
At the end of the day, all that anybody can say is that if it rains enough and fast enough it is possible that rivers will rise, maybe even enough to flood low areas. Wow, what a help this is, who would have ever thought this could happen.
Government has satisfied it’s need to “reduce liability” because they have told you this rather obvious fact and that is, after all is said and done, one of the primary objectives of any government.

What this accomplishes in real life, in real terms of any possible mitigation of flooding, now or in the future, is a bit of a deeper mystery. Best not to pester government with questions about this.

It would be nice to have a few more warm, sunny days interspersed with the clouds and rain. No human can guarantee this of course. Then maybe mosquitoes will come out faster so maybe the cold is good?
