Fishing Line Recycling Program expands to Huntsville

Good news! Muskoka Conservancy’s Fishing Line Recycling Program is expanding north.

At its May 24 council meeting, Huntsville Councillors directed staff to work with Muskoka Conservancy to find two locations for the placement of the tubes where the old fishing line gets deposited.

Muskoka Conservancy first launched the program at the Wharf in Bracebridge Bay Park in August 2022.

“With 15 million anglers in Ontario, there is a lot of fishing line that can be disposed of improperly… Now with the new line recycling program, fishing line can be disposed of properly,” said the program coordinator at the launch, which included two other locations: the George Road boat launch and the boat launch at the Gravenhurst Wharf.

At the time it was noted that if the program was successful it would expand. On Tuesday, May 23 Huntsville Council gave the program the thumbs up.

Most likely at the end of the year, Muskoka Conservancy will collect the fishing line and send it to Berkley Fishing for recycling. Once Berkley Fishing receives the fishing line, they melt it down into plastic pellets and turn it into new plastic products, noted program coordinator Ayden Veitch at the launch.
