Fairvern resident Rebecca Muzzi celebrates 100th birthday

Rebecca Muzzi was born a century ago, on Feb. 24, 1920, in a small northern Ontario town, Smooth Rock Falls. Last weekend, she celebrated her milestone birthday with family and friends at Fairvern Nursing Home.

Muzzi settled in Huntsville after following her first husband, Andre Laflamme, around Ontario as they moved from place to place for his construction work.

The couple had two daughters, Janine and Diana. As a stay-at-home mother, Muzzi enjoyed crocheting, knitting, pickling, and preserving.

“She was extremely neat,” recalled her youngest daughter, Diana Snowden. “People would say the house was so clean you could eat off her basement floor. She was always impeccably dressed, too.”

Muzzi’s faith played an important role in her life and continues to. She joined the Catholic Women’s League in Huntsville and served the league for 64 years. She was recognized for her years of service with a gold maple leaf service pin and a 60-year pin in 2016.

Her first husband passed away in 1974 and, as she was a little on the shy side, a friend recommended that Muzzi join the curling club. Snowden said her mother became quite proficient at the sport and was invited to participate in many bonspiels because of both her good nature and her reliability.

“She was always on time, usually 30 minutes early for everything,” said Snowden. “She was easy to get along with. She didn’t become outgoing until later on in her life.”

Muzzi was introduced to her current husband, Sam Muzzi, by a friend and they were married in 1986.

Her health has been dwindling the last couple of years, but Snowden said her mother still enjoys being social with the other residents at Fairvern Nursing Home and her family that visits regularly.

Muzzi loves playing bingo and participating in the choir.

She has five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

During her birthday celebration, Muzzi received a number of blessings from the mayor, the pope, and the queen, and plaques from the premier, prime minister, governor general, and a diocese. Muzzi was honoured to have Father Broad from Pickering attend the celebration.
