Today we look at more examples of when you or your partner might use Takeout Doubles. Which of the following hands might use a Takeout Double when partner and opponents bid as described?

Case 1:

Spades         Kxxx

Hearts          Qx

Diamonds     AKx

Clubs            xxxx

Case 1: Your right-hand opponent opens One Heart. This hand has twelve points and shortness in the opponent’s suit, and four-card support for the other major, and support for the other unbid suits. You Double for Takeout.

Case 2:

Spades         KQxx

Hearts          Qxxx

Diamonds     xx

Clubs            Axx

Case 2: Your right-hand opponent opens One Diamond.  This hand has eleven points, and shortness in the opponent’s suit, and four-card support for both majors (Hearts and Spades), and support for the other unbid suit.  You Double for Takeout.

Case 3:

Spades         xxxx

Hearts          AKxx

Diamonds     Q

Clubs            xxxx

Case 3: Your right-hand opponent opens One Diamond.  This hand has shortness in the opponent’s suit, and four-card support for both majors, and support for the other unbid suit.  But this hand has only a poor nine points, not the required ten points.  You PASS.
