THE PREFERENCE BID
As I recall the bidding from a game last year in Texas, I opened a spade. Partner bid one no-trump. I rebid two diamonds showing an unbalanced medium hand of 15-17 points with three to five diamonds. It was definitely not a No‑Trump hand.
Surprisingly, partner chastised me. “I hate it when you do that, because now I can’t bid again.” Such unauthorized table talk! Partner passed. The lead was made and dummy came down with two little diamonds. Her two puny spades were not impressive, but they were a better choice than the two puny diamonds. My first-bid spade suit showed five cards in length. My second bid, two diamonds, had only four cards but could have been three cards for my bid of a minor suit. The contract went down with the six‑card fit!
“Why didn’t you make a preference bid and bid two spades?” I asked. “It’s not showing any extra values and you’re still at the two-level. It just says that you prefer spades to diamonds. Spades would have played better for us when you know I have five”. “Oh,” her eyes lit up, “I didn’t know about that. I’ll show a preference next time!”
