Duplicate bridge results and tip: Opener’s second bid can limit her hand

By Val Rhead

You open with a bid of One Heart. You need 25 points to have a shot at game. This opening describes a hand with a range of 12-21 points and a five-card or better Heart suit. Let’s assume that your hand contains a minimum 12–14 points and the five-card suit. Your partner responds Two Hearts. Partner has limited his hand to 6-9 points with at least three-card Heart support making you the Captain. You now know that the partnership has assets of a possible maximum 23 points between you. You must guide the partnership to the best contract. There is an unlikely chance of a 25 point game, so just PASS for your second bid and play at Two Hearts.

However, if your hand is a medium hand containing 15-17 points, the math is different for your second bid. Fifteen plus 9 is 24; you will PASS. However, 17 plus 9 equals 26. Game is possible. You bid Three Hearts asking partner to bid Four Hearts if he has 8-9 points. If he has fewer points than that, he should PASS and you play at Three Hearts.

Now, if for your One Heart opening, you have a maximum hand of 18-21 points, when your partner replies Two-Hearts, you are confident that your partnership has enough for game but not slam. So just bid the game, Four Hearts. She who knows goes!

Bridge is simple, isn’t it? In a future column we will see what happens if partner responds instead with a jump to Three Hearts.
