Winter’s not over yet, but Mother Nature doesn’t always make the outdoors agreeable. Luckily, you can take some of your winter activity indoors for all the fun without worrying about the weather.
The Town of Huntsville offers a variety of skating options on its two ice surfaces at the Don Lough and Jack Bionda arenas, including all-ages public skates, sessions exclusively for parents and tots or adults, and shinny for adults, seniors, or women only.
Public skates: participate or help keep your community active with a sponsorship
Public skates are held every Saturday and Sunday until March 13 plus daily sessions from March 14-18 for March Break, and then start again in September. At less than $6 per person, depending on age, it’s an affordable way to get active.
Public skates are sometimes sponsored by local businesses and organizations, too, which means that everyone skates for free on that day.
“It’s a great way for businesses to show their community spirit while advertising their services or products at the same time,” says Jessica Smith, Recreation and Leisure Coordinator at the Town of Huntsville.
Some businesses choose to set up an information booth in the arena lobby, others offer family-appropriate treats like hot chocolate and cookies, and some elect just to be title sponsor for the day. The choice is yours, says Smith. And at just $250 for a two-hour skate promoted through the Town’s social media channels, and on its website and LCD screens in the Canada Summit Centre, it’s a cost-effective way to get word out about your business.
“Your business or organization can gain optimal exposure to a large crowd and connect with community members, and your support helps to keep our community active,” adds Smith. For more information on sponsoring a public skate, contact Jessica Smith at [email protected] or 705-789-6421 ext 3032.
There are also age-specific skating sessions offered throughout the week, including adult-only skates and parent and tot skates. For the hockey players out there, why not join in a fun game of shinny? There are slots available for adults, women only, 55-plus, 65-plus, and 70-plus.
Note that skaters aged 12 and younger must wear a CSA-approved helmet.
Pre-registration is required for all skating sessions. Learn more and register here.
Private ice rentals
Did you know that you can rent the ice for your own private event, too?
It’s a great way to get family and friends together, throw a unique birthday party, show some appreciation for your employees, or get some hockey or figure skating practice in.
There’s space available throughout the week and on weekends starting at $156/hour inclusive, and you get exclusive access to the rink and change rooms.
