Huntsville’s only art store has new owners and a new name and is ready to spread the love of art in the community.
Samantha Sullivan has dreamt of a career in the art world for many years. She worked in retail before attending OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design University) where she obtained her art degree. She ended up in the world of business in Toronto and worked in finance for over 20 years while she continued to create art in the evenings and on weekends.
She has a particular passion for drawing, painting, photography, and art history.
During a relaxing weekend getaway in Muskoka with her husband Chris, she saw the for sale sign in the window of North Art Supplies. Sullivan decided to retire from finance and make the move north.
“I live and breathe art,” she said. “I knew I needed to retire from the business world and move into my true passion. I’m so grateful to be able to combine all of my knowledge I’ve gained and put it all into this business.”
The store is in the process of being rebranded as Red Pine Art Supply.
It’s important to Sullivan that the store carry Canadian artisans, locally made products, and sustainable art supplies. She also plans to expand the children’s section.
“I wanted to buy the store for the community aspect and to enjoy the beauty here in Muskoka but it’s also really important to me that art is a positive experience for everyone so I want to make sure every age group feels comfortable here,” she said. “Everyone is welcome and there is something for you no matter if you’re a beginner or a professional.”
In the future, she plans to offer art classes in the store’s studio for every age group and ability.
Sullivan also wants to provide space for local artists to work on their pieces.
“The community has been absolutely fantastic and welcoming so far,” she said. “Tons of different types of people have come in. Everyone here has been so lovely to me.”
For her, creativity is happiness and she hopes to impart that feeling to all who enter the store.
“I started every day so excited to be here,” said Sullivan. “I’m so eager to get things going and I’m truly having a blast. I want to keep art in the community and for artists and budding artists to feel positive and happy when they come in. My goal is to foster creativity with our shop.”
Red Pine Art Supply is located at 6 West St. N. and is currently open Monday to Saturday from 9-4.
Curbside pick-up can be arranged if preferred.
The store’s new website is in the works. In the meantime, reach them at 705-784-0220 or [email protected], or follow them on Facebook here or on Instagram @redpineartsupply.
