You could hear their jingle as the Special Olympics Muskoka cross-country ski team entered the Huntsville Council chambers on February 25.

They sported an impressive number of medals and the smiles of champs as they accepted accolades from the Mayor, Huntsville councillors and their coaches for their success at the 2019 Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games. The event was held from January 31 to February 3 in Sault Ste. Marie.

“We want to thank you for being here because your success and you sharing your success with us is a special treat for all the people of Huntsville really proud of what you’ve done,” Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison told the group.

Aitchison quipped to laughter from those present that with the number of medals the team had received they could open a hardware store.

“I’m the most proud coach in the whole town,” said Head Coach Cindy Blake. “This bunch here has really represented us really well. I’m proud to be their coach,” she added to applause.

“Here’s hoping we qualify for… the nationals!” cheered Assistant Coach and Huntsville Councillor Dione Schumacher.

Thanks are due to the Mayor and Council for celebrating this very special win. Those who compete in the Special Olympics are the true Olympians; competing mostly in front of family and friends. They are not looking for the next endorsement contract: rather they compete purely for the love of their sport. To contribute to their self-esteem in this manner, shows a true understanding of their essential nature.
