Silver Salts
Argyria
is a permanent ash-gray discolouration of the skin, conjunctiva of the eye and internal organs due to ingesting products containing silver salts. Internet testimonials cite cures for every disease from cancer and malaria to hemorrhoids and tonsilitis. Exhaustive searches of the medical literature show there is no justification for internal use of silver products either theoretically or practically, in fact it can be dangerous. Another “too good to be true” example.

High Blood Pressure
People who are diagnosed with high blood pressure can often lower their blood pressure by adding more activity to their lives, like walking, swimming and simple weight-weight-training exercises. However, this doesn’t mean people can go off their high blood pressure medications. Talk to your doctor first.

Ear pain during flight
The Valsalva maneuver is useful during a plane’s ascent and descent. It helps equalize the pressure between the inside and outside your ears. You do this by gently blowing through your nose while you pinch your nostrils keeping your mouth closed. Repeat this several times and you will avoid that severe ear pain sometimes experienced particularly when the plane is descending.

Testicle self-examination
Men should do a regular self-examination of their testicles. This is best done after a shower, examining the testicles one at a time, rolling it between thumb and fingers to detect any lumps or abnormalities. Seek medical advice if concerned. As with women’s breast self-examinations, early detection can mean more successful treatment, particularly if the cause is cancer.

E-cigarettes
One of the main selling points for e-cigarettes is they help smokers stop the tobacco habit by replacing it with something less toxic. However, many people continue to use e-cigarettes after kicking the tobacco habit. Many e-cigarettes contain nicotine, an addictive substance which makes them difficult to quit.

Sunscreen Pill?
People often do not apply sunscreens correctly….either too little is used or not reapplied often enough. There is a “sunscreen pill” on the market which sounds too good to be true and is probably is. They do not work as well as topical sunscreens and a hat.

Best time to weigh yourself
When is the best time to weigh yourself? Morning is best after a good sleep and before you’ve eaten your breakfast. Weight does fluctuate throughout the day depending on what you eat and drink and the amount of exercise you do. Remember, to lose one pound per week you need to take in 500 calories less daily, or expend those calories through daily exercise.
