Canadian Tire encourages other businesses to follow their $10,000 lead in support of The Table

Today, December 8, Huntsville’s Canadian Tire owner, Ian McEwen, and store manager, Mark Goodwin, presented The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation with a $10,000 cheque in support of the organization’s services.

The donation comes from a $4,000 contribution by the store that was matched by the Canadian Tire Corporation, along with another $2,000 from the fundraising proceeds of items like the chocolates available at checkouts.

McEwen hopes that the donation will go even further by helping (The Table) to generate more funds. “I hope it will get people to give… Canadian Tire Huntsville would like to see other people step up, too. It’s about everyone helping out.”

The store’s former owner, Ken Moser, began the annual tradition of supporting The Table and McEwen was happy to continue helping a charity that keeps every dollar donated in the local community, he said.

Berg is grateful for large donations like this one from Canadian Tire, because they help the organization to plan ahead. Last month, The Table announced that it needs to raise $275,000 by the end of 2017 or it may have to close its men’s shelter to ensure it can keep its other services running in 2018. It continues to seek 10 more partners for the Bring it to The Table campaign, in which businesses contribute $2,250 per month for 12 months for a total commitment of $27,000.

But she notes that The Table appreciates all donations it receives, no matter what size, citing a recent commitment made by a local resident to donate $12 per month. “Every bit counts, no amount is too small and we are so grateful for everything the community is coming to The Table with. We have received some really generous donations and people are giving what they can. We are hoping to see an increase in donations in December.”

Upcoming Christmas programs that The Table provides through its Love Connection services include Meat for Families, where all guests receive a turkey, ham or chicken; Gifts for Adults, for adult guests who are without families; the Gifts for Kids program and Faith Baptist Church’s Red Sock initiative, which provides each registered child with a gift and a filled stocking; and Kids’ Christmas Shopping, where kids can select gifts for their siblings and parents that will be wrapped by Home Depot staff.
