Busking for a cause: Rob Seymour sings in support of Paddle for Fairvern

Rob Seymour is a veteran participant at the annual Paddle for Fairvern, but this time he’s mixing things up to gain as many donations as possible.

One hundred per cent of funds raised at the event, which is in its sixth year, go toward the non-profit long-term care home’s redevelopment fund. On Saturday, August 11, more than 40 participants in canoes, kayaks and even stand-up paddleboards will paddle the 15 kilometres from Hutcheson Beach on Lake Vernon to Hidden Valley on Peninsula Lake. Seymour will be one of them.

After watching his father sing to Fairvern residents for over 25 years, Seymour has followed in his foot steps and now volunteers at the nursing home throughout the summer. He decided to combine his love for Fairvern with his love for singing by busking around Huntsville to raise funds for his pledge to paddle.

“I’ve already surpassed my busking goal of $500 so have set a new goal of $1,500. I am so grateful to everyone that has supported me and helped me get to this point,” said Seymour.

To catch Seymour’s busking and donate to his pledge, you can find him across town at locations such as Huntsville Place Mall, Canadian Tire, the Royal Bank and Pharmasave.

It’s not too late to sign up to be a paddler or volunteer, or to make a donation to the cause. You can do both at paddleforfairvern.ca.

Fairvern Nursing Home was recently approved for an additional 20 long-term care beds to bring its total to 96 residents. The new home will be built on donated land near the hospital with funds contributed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the District of Muskoka, but Fairvern must still raise $1.5 million for things like furnishings, fixtures, equipment, designs, architects fees, and site assessments. Paddle for Fairvern has raised over $150,000 toward that fund to date.

“We live in an amazing community,” said Tracy Badger, Fairvern’s Administrator. “Our new project was a dream for many years and everyone in Huntsville has been so generous.”

The new build is expected to begin in 2019.
