Brian Walter Dittmar, age 93, passed away peacefully at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital on June 6, 2026, leaving us with many cherished memories of a loving husband, father, grandfather (Papa), great-grandfather (GG) and friend.
Happiest with a fishing rod or garden trowel in his hand, Brian was born in Port McNicoll, Ontario. He grew up in Hamilton with a family that instilled in him the values of dedication, perseverance and service to others.
Brian is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Florence Dittmar, their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his children Carolyn, Cathy and Richard. He is predeceased by his parents (Walter and Matilda Dittmar), brother (Raymond Dittmar), sister (June Lewis), daughter (Karen Alajica) and grandson (Jason Bornstein).
Brian managed the A&P Grocers in Burlington before moving his family to Huntsville, Ontario, in 1971, where he owned and operated Ox-Bow Lodge with the help of family and friends, welcoming guests from near and far for two decades. Brian had a reputation for true hospitality, ensuring every visitor had everything they needed to enjoy their stay.
A self-taught craftsman, there was nothing Brian couldn’t construct or repair. Whether it involved construction, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, watercraft, snowmobiles or small engine repairs, he approached every challenge with a stubborn sense of confidence, skill and determination.
Fishing and gardening were Brian’s greatest passions. He treasured countless days spent on the waters of Algonquin Park, Ox-Bow Lake and on fishing adventures in Northern Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta in pursuit of “the big one.” He ardently nurtured his annual vegetable and flower gardens, allowing them to flourish more impressively each year – a source of great pride. He delighted in growing all his plants from seed and sharing the fruits of his labour with family and friends. Fortunately, he leaves behind a generous supply of his home-canned goods, each jar carrying memories of his love, hard work and generosity.
Brian was also deeply committed to his community. He served for many years as a volunteer firefighter and donated his time and leadership to several tourism associations. A devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, he achieved the rank of Fourth Degree Knight and formed many lasting friendships through his church and community involvement. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether helping with fundraising efforts, community events, or supporting a friend in need.
Brian will be remembered for his strong work ethic, willingness to help others, remarkable ability to fix or build almost anything and the kindness and generosity he extended to his family, friends and the community throughout his life.
At Brian’s request, a funeral or service was not held.
