It’s Wayback Wednesday!: Baysville dam | Sponsored by Jamie Lockwood, broker/owner of Sutton Group Muskoka Realty

Aerial postcard of Baysville showing the dam on the Muskoka River, date unknown.

The first Baysville dam was built of logs and rock in 1873 by W. H. Brown, to get the water power to run his mill. There were three sets of stop logs in the first dam, and the rest was what was called a ‘curtain.’ When the water got high enough it just runs over, according to a project by the Heritage Committee of the Township of Lake of Bays. A second dam was built in 1918. It served to raise the water level in the lake by almost 5 feet, facilitating the movement of both log booms and lake steamer traffic. In 1960, the present dam was opened replacing the stone masonry dam. It was a project of the Province of Ontario. There is a plaque close by commemorating the founding of Baysville.
