Huntsville’s Got Talent is back at the Algonquin Theatre on Saturday, February 10 (7 p.m. showtime) for its second year to showcase the talent of Huntsville’s local community!
Dr. Drew Markham’s idea for Huntsville’s Got Talent came from both his love for television talent shows as well as his love for helping people in the Huntsville community. Drew’s father was a social worker, and heavily involved in breaking down the isolation of people in group homes. In turn, Drew wants to carry on his dad’s work so that individuals with disabilities are fully integrated in the community.
Dr. Drew was nervous about holding the event, but the Huntsville community demonstrated their ability to come together for an important cause and $7,000 was raised for Community Living Huntsville. Safe to say, Drew’s expectations were exceeded! Not only did the event sell out but it left the town hoping for a second year of Huntsville’s Got Talent.
So why was a talent show chosen to fundraise for Community Living? “There is a lot of hidden talent,” said Drew, “People shouldn’t be limited by access of where to share their talents and passions. From the talent, the organizers, judges and host, everyone lives right here in Muskoka.”
With 22 submissions, last year’s acts included singers, dancers, pianists, guitarists, a rapper, aerial performers, an opera singer and a quartet! This year Drew encourages comedians, impressionists, magicians and even poetry readers to come out this year as well.
The auditions are carried out by performers submitting a video. The deadline for entries is January 19, 2018. From there, the judges select most of the final contestants to perform at the Algonquin Theatre. There will also be a Facebook vote contest for the final two Wildcard entries.
Of course, the winners will not be leaving empty-handed. While Drew covers 100 per cent of the costs of theatre rental and advertising, he also provides the prize money. Third prize is $100, second prize is $250 and first prize is an incredible $1,000! The goal for this year? To raise over $10,000 for the incredibly deserving Community Living.
