If you’ve ever wondered where an artists’ inspiration comes from, the Artists of the Limberlost open studio tour is for you. Meet the artists, learn about their creative process and see their workshops set amidst the natural setting of lakes, forests, gardens and rock.
The Artists of the Limberlost studio tour is in its thirteenth season. This year’s tour welcomes new artists and now features six artist studios and eleven guest artists, for a total of 17 artists, all within a short drive of each other. At each studio there are two or three artists who display and demonstrate their craft to visitors.
This unique experience gives you an appreciation for the art, particularly if you choose to purchase a piece or two for yourself or as a special gift.
Peggy Bell, the newest principal artist, has opened her doors this year at Lodge Studio. Both Bell and her guest artist, Terri Howell, paint en plein air in Muskoka and Algonquin Park. Their canvases capture the colour and magical beauty of the water and forest. Gina Denne’s nature-inspired pottery will also be on display in the Lodge.
Jerry Friedman’s dramatic driftwood art shares space in his studio with Brad Wookey’s wildlife watercolours. Outside and surrounding the studio you’ll meet the fantastic woven wood sculptures that are created from the wild imagination of artist Nathan Sowrey.
Catherine O’Mara’s studio on Limberlost Road welcomes back potter Susan Colavecchia and Peter Kourtz with his tranquil metal wind sculptures in the garden. O’Mara paints nature in egg tempera where translucent layers create a luminous glow on the canvas. O’Mara has been opening her home to visitors for thirty years for a show and sale of her own work and twelve years with this great group of local and invited artists.
Jeweller Danielle Goulet’s studio at Billy Bear Resort hosts landscape painter Barb TenEycke and artisan Craig Henshaw. Henshaw is a knifemaker who specializes in handmade chef’s knives forged in a 2000-year-old traditional process.
Mark Kulas’ paintings are dramatic, bold and colourful and depict wildlife in his stylized woodland art. At his studio you also will meet guest artist Dan Hill with his pottery on display.
Brian Markham will be demonstrating how he turns rugged bark-covered burls into handcrafted bowls and platters on his lathe. Here you are entertained by watching Markham’s wood-turning skills while accompanied by the music of singer-guitarist, Don Ablett. Pam Carnochan’s ‘Watercolours with Wool’ art is on display alongside Carol-Ann Michaelson’s silver and bronze jewellery.
You will be warmly welcomed at each stop along the studio tour. The Artists of the Limberlost open studio tour runs August 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The tour has no entrance fee and it is self-directed. To plan your tour and for more information about the artists, visit artistsofthelimberlost.ca.
