Aquabiking: coming soon to a pool near you

It’s new and it’s cool and it’s coming to Huntsville this fall. Aquabiking – fitness on sleek bikes that sit on the pool floor – is a craze that, thanks to its low-impact nature, offers wellness benefits for just about anyone. Think spinning where you set the pace.

Thanks to a $20,500 grant from the Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade’s Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund, the Town of Huntsville will be purchasing up to 10 aquabikes to be included in the Centennial Pool’s fall and winter programming. Classes will be offered for ages 13 to 100 and beyond.

But why would you want to ride a bike underwater?

“It’s a great activity for just about everyone,” says Simone Babineau, Manager of Recreation and Leisure Services for the Town of Huntsville. “It can be used purely for fitness, it can be an introduction back to the pool for those who haven’t been in a while, and it can be used for rehab after injury.” The Town is partnering with ProActive Rehab, Motivations Fitness, and Huntsville High School to be able to offer the programming to people recovering from injury and athletes looking for another way to train.

Classes will be adaptive for different fitness levels and abilities, allowing participants who might have trouble with either dry-land cycling or swimming to reap the rewards brought by exercise in the water.

From a fitness perspective, the benefits are simple: the harder you peddle, the more resistance you get and the more you work the muscles in your legs and improve your cardiovascular health. But it comes without added strain on your joints, which makes it an ideal activity for rehabilitation and athletes who want the burn without the lasting soreness afterward.

The lesser resistance at slower speeds is what makes it good for all fitness levels – you can start out peddling slowly and as cardiovascular capacity and muscle strength improve you just peddle faster.

We are really excited about it. It’s so versatile that it can be used by both youth and seniors, it’s a unique alternative to high-impact fitness activities – one that can be a lifelong pursuit – and it’s a fun, social activity.
