Huntsville and Muskoka musicians, bands, duos, and singer-songwriters are encouraged to consider submitting applications and proposals to the Amy Louie Grossman’s Music Scholarship. Applications are accepted until September 23, 2024.
Established in 2012, the Amy Louie Grossman’s Music Scholarship was created by the Louie family, owners of Grossman’s Tavern, in memory of Amy Louie, a cherished member of the family and the business. Amy’s vision was to support local musicians, and this scholarship, valued at $2,000 CAD, aims to fulfill her dream by providing vital funding to help artists further their careers.
The Huntsville band The Swingin’ Blackjacks, fronted and led by local music favourite Matt Allen, won the scholarship in 2018 and used the funds to remix and redistribute their EP, ‘Hi-Fi Sound.’ Allen is renowned for his mix of blues, swing, and rockabilly and tours endlessly throughout Muskoka.
Bands are famously underfinanced, and an artist development bursary/scholarship such as this is a bonus. Perhaps using the funds for publicity or other elements of a music project.
Grossman’s, the famous Toronto tavern, has been a ground and vital supporter of the Canadian music scene for decades. Well known bands such as the Downchild Blues Band and the Jeff Healy Band cut their teeth with rumpus Saturday night shows. Grossman’s Tavern continuous to provide the highest quality of performance in the city.
The Amy Louie Grossman’s Music Scholarship has been successful in finding and helping musicians for over a decade. Muskoka bands are encouraged to consider applying.
Applications for 2024 are now open and close on September 23, 2024.
All submissions will be considered. A full explanation of the project and the need for funding must be included as part of the application. The proposal criteria should include the following:
- Applicant’s name, band name, email address, phone number and mailing address
- Links to the applicant’s website, Facebook, and other social media
- Links for listening to the applicant’s music
- The proposal should be 200 words or less.
- The proposal should be documented in PDF format

Gary Kendall, bassist for the Downchild Blues band and organizer of the event, explained to Doppler that “The first recipient receives $2,000. The runner-up gets $1,000. There is a panel of five music expert judges, and the winners will be announced on October 8, 2024.
“And on that particular night in October, we have commitments from Danny Marks, the Happy Pals, which is a New Orleans jazz band that plays Grossman’s every Saturday afternoon,” explained Marks, adding that there will also be a surprise performance by one of the artists who went on to worldwide fame and fortune who got their starting Grossman’s.

Saw Matt at the Docks a while ago, great performer. Bought my first CD in years.
Grossman’s Tavern was a favourite destination of mine in the late 60’s and early 70’s.
Matt Allen is an authentic interpreter of both grassroots and modern day blues and we’re lucky to have him in Huntsville.
