The frog had it wrong. Being green, or at least living that way, is achievable with small, easy steps that can have big impact over time.
During Earth Week, April 18-24, Huntsville-area residents can learn just how easy it is.
To kick off the week, get inspired by the Reel Alternatives screening of “All the Time in the World,” a documentary about a family that headed into the Yukon wilderness for almost a year to live a simpler life. Check out the trailer below:
If that seems extreme, don’t worry. You can take little actions to make a big difference.
Start by heading over to the Huntsville Public Library on Tuesday with your kids aged 3-12 for some Sustainable Stories, including a reading by local author Matt Richter from his book “Counting on the Future” and some creative re-use crafts. Younger kids can join in an Earth Day-themed story and craft time on Thursday, too.
Have a green thumb? You’ll have two opportunities to gear up your garden during Earth Week. Learn more about the Urban Streetscape Tree Planting Program and apply to have a native tree planted in your front yard, and then pick up a free, nutrient-rich boost for your garden at the Annual Compost Giveaway – don’t forget your shovel!
If you’re curious about living a life with a lighter footprint, there’s something to learn all week long. As the weekend arrives, get ready to ramp up your learning with three days of lectures, activities, how-tos, and even a Twitter chat!
A Twitter chat and a look into the future
Join the Muskoka Watershed Council for their Environmental Lecture Series on Thursday afternoon. Dr. Peter Sale will present “Planning for Climate Change in Muskoka.” Learn what Muskoka’s climate might look like in 40 years and what we can do to prepare for it.
Then on Friday afternoon, join the Town of Huntsville’s Sustainability Coordinator, Rebecca Francis, for a Twitter chat from 2-3pm. Get green living tips and ask your “how-to” questions. Follow along at @townhuntsville and use the hashtag #earthweekhville.
A fair full of green fun
On Saturday, downtown Huntsville is the place to be for green living and spring-time fun. Earth Week celebrations coincide with Huntsville’s inaugural Muskoka Maple Festival. Check out the community fair at Huntsville Public Library and learn everything from how to start seeds and make your own green cleaning products, to identifying the wild foods in your backyard and how making maple syrup is a sustainable industry. Plus learn about recycling and composting, listen to some great live music, sample some tasty local fare, and browse the green marketplace.
Wrap up the week with a community-wide clean-up day on Sunday, April 24.
“We all have a responsibility to find ways that we can make our lives have a positive impact on the planet,” says Francis. “Earth Week is a good time to think about those things and commit to starting with some small actions in your life.”
