Art Fx is a year-long series on Huntsville Doppler featuring Huntsville-area visual artists.
“A Day in May” is an original egg tempera on birch panel measuring 60″ x30″.
“Last May as the reality of COVID restrictions meant the cancellation of art tours, my garden got some
much needed attention and I truly enjoyed the beautiful spring we had in 2020,” says artist Catherine O’Mara. “Inspired by one of those
fine days is ‘A Day in May’. After this year of isolation I am anticipating the return of spring and these
wild chokeberry blossoms against a clear blue Muskoka sky.”
Egg tempera is a classic painting technique that reached its peak in the Renaissance. Tempera fell out of favour with the development of oil paints, however a revival of this labour-intensive practice of creating both paints and panels has been embraced by many contemporary painters.
Catherine has been working with egg tempera for 25 years, sometimes taking a more experimental
approach by adding a relief when preparing the panels.
About the artist:
Muskoka inspires luminous paintings, often large format that reflect her love of the rhythms of nature.
A 20-year member of the prestigious Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour and one of the originators of Artists of the Limberlost, Catherine works from her home studio and gallery where visitors are warmly
welcomed.

Catherine is one of Muskoka’s finest artists. Her egg tempera technique is unique to our region.
When Covid is over it is well worth the drive to her studio to see her incredible work.
