Art Fx is a year-long series on Huntsville Doppler featuring Huntsville-area visual artists.
Paula Boon loves to create evocative images by pairing words from cast-off books with natural objects she finds while out walking and then photographing them against a black background. She enjoys the ephemeral quality of this work. “The originals only exist for a few minutes,” she says. “I take the photo and then they’re gone. It’s good practice for life.”
“Open” is one of her favourite creations so far. She explains, “There’s something so beautiful and metaphoric about milkweed pods. The one in this piece is just about to burst. What a moment: the seeds are ready to fly, which will empty the pod and at the same time create so many possibilities for future growth.”
This piece, like all of Paula’s found-word art, is available as a 10” x 10” print for $69.
About the artist:
Paula Boon is a Port Sydney writer and editor who has adopted the practice of clipping words from various sources, combining them in unexpected ways, and then pairing them with natural ephemera to create found-word art. Her works have appeared in shows across Muskoka and in several literary magazines. She has also conducted workshops for others who are interested in experiencing the playfulness, freedom, and meditative quality of found-word art creation.
