{"id":99495,"date":"2021-06-26T07:05:56","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T11:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=99495"},"modified":"2021-06-26T07:05:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T11:05:57","slug":"saturday-streetscapes-fetterly-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/saturday-streetscapes-fetterly-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Streetscapes: Fetterly Street"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Michael Walmsley<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fetterly Street runs S-N off Manominee Street<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To trace the origin of the name given to Fetterly Street we have to dip way back in Huntsville\u2019s history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the person after whom the street is named is the Huntsville resident whose roots go further back in the area\u2019s history than any other resident whose name appears on one of our street signs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin this journey in Albany, New York when, in 1786, a man by the name of Philip Fetterly was born.&nbsp; The very next year, another Albany family, the Ouderkirks, welcomed a new daughter by the name of Magdalena (\u201cLaney\u201d) into the world.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Philip and Magdalena married one another and made their way to a backwoods emerging community that would eventually have the name of Huntsville, Ontario.&nbsp;The reason for the move seems to be connected to Magdalena\u2019s relative, William Ouderkirk, who had set up residence along Huntsville\u2019s Muskoka River under a squatters\u2019 right.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philip and Magdalena raised eleven children including a son, John Peter Fetterly, who was born in the year 1807 in what would become Huntsville.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, the Fetterly family resided in Willamsburgh, Ontario and it was there where young John met Anna Hanes who was born in Williamsburgh in 1813.&nbsp;John and Anna were married in Anna\u2019s birth town in 1830 but must have decided that the potential for a good life resided along the shores of the Muskoka River because they relocated to John\u2019s birth place and followed John\u2019s parents\u2019 propagation journey by raising eleven children of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Fetterly had a hand in building Muskoka\u2019s first water-powered sawmill in Bracebridge.&nbsp;He then applied his construction skills in the building of a water-powered mill at the current location of the Brunel Locks.&nbsp;The Locks Mill was completed in 1871 on land that Fetterly owned.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/25263.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/25263-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/25263.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Above: The Locks Mill was constructed in 1871 by John Fetterly who sold it to the Cottrill family in 1907. It closed in 1954 when part of the mill foundation collapsed. It was the longest operating waterpowerd sawmill in Muskoka. (Photo and details courtesy of Muskoka Digital Archives. )<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John\u2019s philanthropic nature came to Huntsville\u2019s assistance when he offered a piece of land on his Huntsville property to the Methodists for the placement of the Methodist Cemetery which is now known as the Locks Cemetery.
