{"id":99141,"date":"2021-06-18T10:53:52","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T14:53:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=99141"},"modified":"2021-06-18T11:00:40","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T15:00:40","slug":"team-shan-bottle-drive-raising-funds-for-breast-cancer-awareness-in-young-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/team-shan-bottle-drive-raising-funds-for-breast-cancer-awareness-in-young-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Team Shan bottle drive raising funds for breast cancer awareness in young women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever since losing her 24-year-old daughter to breast cancer in 2005, Lorna Larsen has made it her mission to educate young people on the fact that cancer does not discriminate by age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people don\u2019t know the harrowing statistic that over 8,600 people between the ages of 15-39 are diagnosed in Canada every year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Shan Larsen had just graduated from university and had planned to go to teachers&#8217; college. But she was misdiagnosed by her health care providers and diagnosed late with metastatic breast cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cancer quickly spread and she died just four months after her diagnosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then Lorna,  has educated young people all over Canada through presentations at high schools, colleges, and universities, as well as posting billboards as reminders to check your body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/06\/Team-Shan-Marketing-Poster-1024x513.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99170\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>An image of the billboard Team Shan is currently trying to fund (supplied)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeam Shan is dedicated to reaching young women with their breast cancer risk and breast health information. Our goal is to increase early detection and help improve outcomes for young women diagnosed with breast cancer,\u201d said Lorna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their website, <a href=\"https:\/\/teamshan.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>teamshan.ca<\/u><\/a>, features a wide range of tips, common symptoms and signs, links, support, and other aspects of education surrounding breast cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorna, who worked as a nurse and lactation consultant for many years, took early retirement to volunteer full-time with Team Shan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since moving to Huntsville two years ago, she has immersed herself and her charity into the community and said they have been very supportive of Team Shan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team Shan has held a golf tournament and bottle drives, and Lorna has also collaborated with Enliven Cancer Care numerous times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really want to continue to raise awareness and education here in Huntsville,\u201d said Lorna. \u201cA young women came up to me in the grocery store here and told me she went to Western University and had seen my talk and it really impacted her. It\u2019s so great to hear that right in our own community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to working with Enliven, Team Shan has also facilitated community displays in Huntsville and shared print materials locally to help reach young women and their families. They have also supported the Kelly Shires Snow Run at Hidden Valley resort for a number of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCOVID has been hard on small charities like Team Shan,\u201d said Lorna. \u201cWith events and fundraisers cancelled due to the pandemic, Team Shan had to think outside the box to continue to raise awareness and support our activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team Shan hosted a neighbourhood bottle drive in the spring of 2020 raising $260. The current bottle drive has raised $146 to date and will run until Saturday, June 19.
