F*ck cancer.<\/p>\n

Those simple words depict a message that is loud and clear.<\/p>\n

And those words certainly rang true to a 38-year-old man who was firmly standing behind them. But, sadly, a week ago today David MacDonald lost his battle with cancer far too soon in his young life.<\/p>\n

<\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n

MacDonald, who was featured as part of Huntsville Doppler\u2019s weekly extraordinary person profile back in November, passed away in Huntsville Hospice on January 19 surrounded by his family.<\/p>\n

For the last week, Facebook has been flooded with heart-felt messages to his wife, Karrie, and their two kids, Piper, seven, and Lochlin, five. Four days after losing her husband, Karrie posted a photo of herself and the kids smiling telling everyone that the last few days had been rough but that the outpour of positive messages and love was giving them something to smile about.<\/p>\n

Karrie told Huntsville Doppler yesterday that life will not be the same without her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re okay,\u201d she said of how the kids are handling the loss of their dad, who lit up their world as they did his. \u201cPiper is taking it hard. She gets it more. She remembers when my dad passed away in hospice. She was like, \u2018I remember this place.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Karrie said MacDonald stayed at home until he finally made the decision to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just said, \u2018I think it\u2019s time to go.\u2019 And he died a day later.\u201d<\/p>\n

MacDonald\u2019s mother, Jan, who said her son passed away pain-free and peacefully, shared some special words about him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was such a wonderful father. He cared so much about the kids and always listened to them, and he found patience somehow. He truly loved Karrie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jan said that what surprised her the most about her son was when she was out in public with him, how many people knew him. He had a natural ability to be kind and polite, which she found heartwarming.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a credit to his profession, that\u2019s what we were told,\u201d his father, Dave, added.<\/p>\n

Jan went on to say she is extremely grateful that she and her husband brought their family to the Lake of Bays area 41 years ago.<\/p>\n

I believe we wouldn\u2019t have got the support from the community in any larger centre. We’re just so thankful for the nursing care he received from Karrie and the professionals, which enabled Dave to stay home as long as he wished.

David’s sister, Heather Smith, called him a wonderful man who wasn’t just her brother but her friend.<\/p>\n

The community was supporting MacDonald in so many ways. Fundraisers were being held, t-shirts and stickers were being sold, and random, generous people were giving cash donations and gift certificates to them.<\/p>\n

MacDonald\u2019s friend, Jarrett Martin, called him a down-to-earth country boy with a great sense of humour. He had a laid-back approach to life and was a mellow guy who didn\u2019t sweat the small stuff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it came to work and real life he was never high-stress or in a rush. He always took it easy. When I was hanging out with him, he brought me down to that level. It was beneficial to both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin noted that even with MacDonald gone, there will continue to be an amazing amount of support for his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be missing him, but never forgetting him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Plans for a celebration of life for MacDonald are slated to happen at the Huntsville Legion, where he wanted it. However, a date has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

A Go Fund Me<\/a><\/span> account in Dave MacDonald\u2019s name will continue to be active for the next few weeks to help the family with any ongoing financial matters.<\/p>\n
