Train lovers rejoice: the provincial government has announced that the Ontario Northlander will once again pass through Huntsville, but not until at least the middle of this decade.<\/p>\n\n\n

The announcement was made today via Zoom by Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, along with Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and MPP for Nipissing, Norm Miller, Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP, and Corina Moore, president and CEO of Ontario Northland.<\/p>\n\n\n

Out of the initial business case<\/span><\/a> unveiled by the province today, one option (Option 6) for seasonally adjusted service was selected for further design and planning work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That option includes a 13-stop route from Toronto to Timmins or Cochrane. As part of the 2021 Ontario Budget<\/span><\/a>, the government committed $5 million to support the planning and design work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial design of that route includes stops at Toronto’s Union Station, Langstaff, Gormley, Washago, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, North Bay, Temagami, Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Matheson, and Timmins or Cochrane, with bus service to connect other communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would include one trip per direction per day, four to seven days per week depending on the season, with nighttime departures from Northern Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This option “considers scaling weekly trip frequency on seasonal travel demand along the entire rail corridor,” according to the business case. “Periods of high demand, such as the summer and winter holiday seasons would see increased service, while periods with lower demand would have reduced service levels. Overall, this option will provide between four to seven days per week and will average 4.75 trips per week over a full year. Initial assumptions on service levels were developed based on the ridership of the previous Northlander service but could be further refined in future project development.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the business case, capital costs for the project would run to almost $60 million, with operating and maintenance costs estimated at up to $212 million for the project’s 60-year lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The province is aiming to complete the next stage of planning and design work by 2022 which could allow a potential in-service date in the mid 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delay is due in part to the need for a review of existing infrastructure, said Minister Mulroney. “We take safety very seriously and we need to do the necessary track audits” as well as survey people across Northern Ontario about what type of service they’d like to see. The tracks from North Bay to Toronto are owned and currently in use by CN Rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moore said that Ontario Northland would be working with CN to address the types of scheduling issues experienced by passengers when the Northlander was last in service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s a number of things that we’ve learned from the last service that we provided that we need to make sure are changed,” she said. “One of them was the schedule getting into Toronto so that people are able to do their business appointments or medical appointments on time throughout the day, and the other one is making sure that there is on-time performance guarantees with the rail freight side of CN. We’ll be able to get there but it requires that conversation and looking at the infrastructure and making sure that the timing of our schedule is integrated properly with the freight schedule. That’s one of our top priorities in talking to CN that we will begin in the coming weeks.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moore added that she envisions modern reinstated service that would include WiFi, food services, spacious seating, power outlets, and accessible washrooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MPP Norm Miller said he looks forward to “seeing this project progress and welcoming the many benefits improved rail service will bring to our region.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ontario Northland’s passenger rail route from Toronto to Cochrane was cancelled in 2012. Huntsville’s train station was sold to a private group in 2017. The new owners said at that time that should passenger rail service return, they would incorporate it into their plans for the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Municipal politicians and advocacy group the Northeastern Ontario Rail Network (NEORN) have been calling on the provincial government to keep its 2018 election promise to bring back the Northlander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
