{"id":97927,"date":"2021-06-12T05:11:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-12T09:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=97927"},"modified":"2021-06-12T07:43:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T11:43:58","slug":"saturday-streetscapes-hunters-bay-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/saturday-streetscapes-hunters-bay-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Streetscapes: Hunters Bay Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Michael Walmsley<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hunters Bay Drive follows the north shoreline of Hunters Bay off of Hodges Lane<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The body of water now known as Hunters Bay was originally a hotspot for those settlers who were avid hunters and trappers.&nbsp;So, it seems most likely that the water became known as Hunters Bay because of those outdoor enthusiasts, right?&nbsp;Wrong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that Huntsville\u2019s name came from founding father George Hunt, Hunters Bay has to be connected to old George\u2019s surname, right?&nbsp;Wrong again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George actually had a good friend who was a lumberman and this friend came to Lake Vernon in search of potential mill sites.&nbsp;The lumberman spent considerable time sourcing out the big bay to the east of the lake and, although he never did settle in this area permanently, he remains tied to the bay even today.&nbsp;His name was James Hunter and he was born in Scotland in 1847.&nbsp;James married Catherine (n\u00e9e Chalmers) in 1874 and they raised five sons and one daughter in the &#8220;wilds&#8221; of Muskoka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the drive along the north shore of the bay provided a beautiful panorama of Hunters Bay and so the name Hunters Bay Drive made it onto area maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/Hunters-Bay-from-above-the-train-station-date-unknown-Photographer-Frank-Micklethwaite.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97929\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/Hunters-Bay-from-above-the-train-station-date-unknown-Photographer-Frank-Micklethwaite-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/Hunters-Bay-from-above-the-train-station-date-unknown-Photographer-Frank-Micklethwaite-630x482.jpg 630w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/Hunters-Bay-from-above-the-train-station-date-unknown-Photographer-Frank-Micklethwaite.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>Hunters Bay, date unknown.
