OVERCALLS AND TAKE-OUT DOUBLES<\/strong><\/p>\n The opponents have opened the bidding but you have good values in your hand. You have two options for entering the bidding at this point.<\/p>\n For option one, you can make a \u201ctake-out-double\u201d with shortness in the bid suit and 3 or 4\u2011card support in the unbid suits. You need at least 10 high-card points. Your partner is forced to respond even with zero points. If your partner has 8 or more points, he will respond with a jump bid. However, if the opponents bid after your double, your partner is off the hook. With 18 points or more you can double and then bid again to show a big hand.<\/p>\n For option two, you can make an \u201covercall”. Primarily, you must have a good 5-card suit and at least 8 points at the 1-level. You need a good 5-card suit and at least 11 points overcall at the 2-level. Consider your vulnerability when deciding to bid.<\/p>\n Here are the reasons why you want to make an overcall. You want to compete for a part-score or game. You want to suggest a good lead to your partner. You want to obstruct the opponent\u2019s bidding.<\/p>\n Now you need to know how to respond to your partner after your opponent has overcalled. Your partner bid 1 heart. Your opponent has overcalled 1 spade. You have 10 or more points and good support for your partner\u2019s hearts. You have a choice of making a limit raise by jumping to 3 hearts or you could also show a limit raise by cue-bidding the opponent\u2019s suit, 2 spades. The second option will keep your bidding at a lower level. The cue bid may also flummox your opponent for a few seconds.
