The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has reported three new COVID-19 cases in Huntsville over the past two days to bring this month’s total to 14 cases.<\/p>\n

The newest cases are a 35-44 year-old male whose infection is outbreak-related, a 35-44 year-old female whose case is under investigation, and an 18-34 year-old male whose case is under investigation.<\/p>\n

In his COVID briefing on Tuesday, SMDHU medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner, noted that some of this month’s cases are family clusters. Rolston’s Home Building Centre also notified its customers on Monday that two of its employees had tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

It’s unknown how many of the cases reported in March are variants of concern (VOC)\u2014with few exceptions, the health unit doesn’t specify the municipalities where the variants of concern have been identified. Within Muskoka there have been 24 cases identified as variants of concern as of March 9, 2021, up from 16 the last time Dr. Gardner reported\u2014one in an institutional setting, six related to outbreaks, and 17 sporadic cases in the community. Simcoe Muskoka has the highest number of variants of concern in Ontario. Most of the VOC cases in Simcoe Muskoka have been in Simcoe County. To date 232 Simcoe Muskoka cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern UK B.1.1.7 (UK), four cases have tested positive for the P.1 variant of concern (Brazil), one case has tested positive for the B.1.351 variant of concern (South Africa), and an additional 473 cases have screened positive for a variant of concern and are awaiting confirmatory testing.<\/p>\n

Of the 83 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Huntsville to date, 14 are active. None are currently in hospital in Huntsville. Two people have died from the disease in Huntsville, as well as a third person in Muskoka Lakes.<\/p>\n

There have been 40 COVID-19 cases in Huntsville since Jan. 1. In Lake of Bays, there have been six cases in total, all of which are resolved.<\/p>\n

There have been a total of 244 cases reported in Muskoka to date (23 of them currently active) and 6,556 in Simcoe County (409 active). (For a full list of Huntsville and Lake of Bays cases to date, and other COVID-19 updates for the area, visit our COVID-19 page<\/a>.)<\/p>\n
