Seven students at Huntsville Public School unveiled their short film \u201cWhat It\u2019s Like To Be a Girl\u201d during a school assembly on January 15. The eight-and-a-half-minute film featured students and school staff \u2013 both female and male \u2013 and touched on body image, discrimination, and social media influences on girls.<\/p>\n
All of the students are part of the school\u2019s student leadership group and wanted to address what they see as an imbalance in our society.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoys are sometimes valued more than girls,\u201d said grade seven student Olivia Luttrell.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they can see themselves as more powerful,\u201d added Millie Cassie-Batchelor, a grade eight student. \u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of judgement directed at girls.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grade seven student Niva Gris\u00e9 knows about the good work the YWCA does to empower girls. \u201cWhen I learned we could do this project, I was interested because I have experience going to YWCA programs. It\u2019s a good opportunity to raise awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n
It took the group approximately three months to plan and produce the film, but technical difficulties meant that they had to scramble to pull it together in the week and a half before the launch.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
