{"id":90910,"date":"2020-11-01T05:25:17","date_gmt":"2020-11-01T10:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huntsville.dopperonline.ca\/?p=90910"},"modified":"2020-10-31T09:41:35","modified_gmt":"2020-10-31T13:41:35","slug":"beat-the-silent-killer-prevent-carbon-monoxide-in-your-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doppleronline.ca\/huntsville\/beat-the-silent-killer-prevent-carbon-monoxide-in-your-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Beat the silent killer: prevent carbon monoxide in your home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>A message from the Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As daylight savings time ends, Ontario\u2019s Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week begins.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs from November 1-7, and the Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers remind you to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) in your home by getting all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left; margin-right: 14px;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45658\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;In Ontario, more than 80 per cent of injuries and deaths from CO occur in the home,&#8221; said Huntsville\/Lake of Bays Fire Chief Rob Collins. &#8220;We want to make sure everyone is safe from CO. Get all fuel-burning appliances inspected by a registered contractor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Muskoka Fire Prevention Officers remind you to install CO alarms in your home if you have a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. With the time change, it is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when you change your clocks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You must have a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage,&#8221; said Chief Collins. &#8220;For added protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every storey of the home according to manufacturer\u2019s instructions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you live in a condo or apartment building with a service room, CO alarms must be installed in the service room and adjacent to each sleeping area of all homes above, below and beside the service room. In condo or apartment buildings that have a garage, CO alarms must be installed adjacent to each sleeping area of all homes above, below and beside the garage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is CO?<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 CO is known as the silent killer because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that can be deadly.<br \/>\n\u2022 CO is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely in fuel-burning appliances and devices such as furnaces, gas or wood fireplaces, hot water heaters, stoves, barbeques, portable fuel-burning heaters and generators and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prevent CO in your home:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents are cleaned and inspected annually.<br \/>\n\u2022 Check that all outside appliance vents are not blocked.<br \/>\n\u2022 Gas and charcoal barbeques should only be used outside, away from all doors, windows, vents, and other building openings. Never use barbeques inside garages, even if the garage doors are open.<br \/>\n\u2022 Portable fuel-burning generators should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from windows, doors, vents and other building openings.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure all portable fuel-burning heaters are vented properly, according to manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.<br \/>\n\u2022 Open the flue before using a fireplace for adequate ventilation.<br \/>\n\u2022 Never run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor inside a garage, even if the garage doors are open. Always remove a vehicle from the garage immediately after starting it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know the symptoms of CO poisoning:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, as well as confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness and death.<br \/>\n\u2022 If your CO alarm sounds, and you or other occupants suffer from symptoms of CO poisoning, get everyone out of the home immediately. Then call 9-1-1 or your local emergency services number from outside the building.<br \/>\n\u2022 If your CO alarm sounds, and no one is suffering from symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery needs replacing, or the alarm has reached its &#8220;end-of-life&#8221; before calling 9-1-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know the sound of your CO alarm:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Your CO alarm sounds different than your smoke alarm. Test both alarms monthly and make sure everyone in your home knows the difference between the two alarm sounds.<br \/>\n\u2022 Don\u2019t be confused by the sound of your CO alarm\u2019s low-battery warning.
