As of January 1, 2016, electricity costs will rise thanks to the retirement of the 10 per cent rebate electricity users have enjoyed since January 1, 2011. The benefit was a five-year plan intended to offset rising electricity costs.<\/p>\n<p>It comes at a time when electricity costs continue to rise. The Ontario Energy Board <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ontarioenergyboard.ca\/oeb\/_Documents\/Press%20Releases\/news_release_RPP_20151015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">announced an increase in winter rates<\/a><\/strong> effective November 1, 2015.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8892\" style=\"width: 956px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8892\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8892\" src=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/12\/Winter-rates.jpg\" alt=\"New winter electricity rates came into effect November 1, 2015\" width=\"946\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/12\/Winter-rates-300x106.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/12\/Winter-rates-768x271.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media-doppleronline-ca.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2015\/12\/Winter-rates.jpg 946w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 946px) 100vw, 946px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New winter electricity rates came into effect November 1, 2015<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rise won&#8217;t be as large as it could be for residences, however: those will be exempt from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fin.gov.on.ca\/en\/tax\/drc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Debt Retirement Charge (DRC)<\/a><\/strong> also beginning on January 1.<\/p>\n<p>The changes mean that Ontarians will see an average of a $10 increase on electricity bills, in addition to the new, higher winter rates. Low-income electricity consumers can apply to the new <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.energy.gov.on.ca\/en\/ontario-electricity-support-program\/\" data-trackable=\"clean-energy-benefit:post-content:\/en\/ontario-electricity-support-program\/\">Ontario Electricity Support Program<\/a> <\/strong>for a credit based on household income and number of residents. Those credits, once approved, are applied directly to your electricity bill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><broadstreet-zone zone-id=\"45657\" keywords=\"\" soft-keywords=\"true\" zone-alias=\"\"><\/broadstreet-zone><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario&#8217;s Clean Energy Benefit is no more.
