The Huntsville Festival of the Arts is pleased to announce the launch of its annual scholarship program.<\/p>\n

First introduced in 1997, the scholarship awards were launched to foster the development of performing arts talent in our community. The program aims to support young people ages 17 or over who are continuing studies in the performing arts (music, theatre, dance) at post-secondary institutions or with an accredited professional instructor. The deadline for applications is June 12, 2020.<\/p>\n

“We believe that it is our responsibility to support and reinvest in the community through expanded outreach, educational programming, and the scholarship programs,” says Carol Gibson, board president. “We have incredibly talented young people in this region, and we are honoured to assist them as they develop their skills even further.”<\/p>\n

While the scholarships were originally available to any age group, beginning in 2012, the Festival decided to direct awards only to senior graduating high school students in recognition of the increasing cost of post-secondary education. Since 1997, the Huntsville Festival of the Arts has awarded scholarships to 45 senior students who were continuing their education in the performing arts.<\/p>\n

The selection process includes an audition in front of adjudicators. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these auditions will be virtual through pre-recorded videos. The pandemic has also affected the number of scholarships the Festival can offer. Over the past number of years, HfA has offered $3,000 in scholarship funds. This year\u2019s amount has been reduced to $1,000.<\/p>\n

“Like so many in the community, the Festival has felt a huge financial impact due to the pandemic,” says executive director, Dan Watson. “Due to the loss of revenues, HfA has had to decrease the support we can offer. However, we are working hard to raise the scholarship amounts again next year.”<\/p>\n
